Maybe you could toggle the contrast/brightness? I know you can do that with the dash-illumination. Theres a dial near the headlight controls. Maybe you can (you should be able to) adjust the monitor settings on the navigation screen as well. I would check the user manual or ask the dealer/salesman.

The navigation screen should automatically change its background colors (and possible other colors) or make the screen dimmer whenever you turn your headlights on. If not, there is a day/night setting that you can toggle that will make the screen automatically adjust to like a "night mode" whenever you turn your headlights on.

The day / night setting is not easily located on the 2004 model - I've checked with the dealership and they have had difficulty in locating it too, including the hidden menu setting - I wonder if it exists on the current model - if not can this be added ? Any ideas ?

The screen has a light sensor on it (the little clear lens centered on the lower bezel). It auto dims according to ambient light. Put your finger on and off the lens and you will see the brightness change, You can set the baseline brightness in the "settings" menu. The brightness you set this to will be the brightness level when you turn on the lights and have the dash light knob all the way up. And you can use the dash light knob at night which will substantially reduce the screen brightness from the baseline level.

Problem is if you set the baseline brightness too low (comfortable at night with the dash lights all the way up), it won't be bright enough during the day. Nothing is ever perfect is it......
